7 Top Benefits of ADHD Glasses You Should Know

ADHD Glasses: Can They Really Help You Focus?

Ever feel like your brain is in 15 tabs at once and you can’t find the one that’s playing the music?

If staying focused feels like it's all you ever try to do, you’re not alone.

Vision might be playing a bigger role in your ADHD symptoms than you think.

I'm sharing what I learned about vertical heterophoria with you.

You of course need to make your own decisions.

This is simply what worked for me.

That’s where ADHD glasses come in.

They’re not magic, but for some people, they help quiet the noise.

And that can make everyday tasks like teaching, reading, or lesson planning—less of a struggle.

What’s the Link Between ADHD and Vision?

Many adults with ADHD also struggle with hidden vision issues that make focusing way harder than it needs to be.

When I first learned about vertical heterophoria, I was so intrigued.

Here are a few that might sound familiar:

  • Convergence Insufficiency – Your eyes don’t team up well to look at close objects, causing double vision, fatigue, or headaches while reading.
  • Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) – Your eyes aren’t aligned properly, making depth perception, tracking text, or reading across a page exhausting.
  • Vertical Heterophoria – One eye is slightly higher than the other, leading to headaches, balance problems, neck tension, and a weird off-kilter feeling.
  • General Visual Strain – Blurred vision, light sensitivity, or screen fatigue can all make your brain work harder than it should.

If your eyes and brain aren’t syncing well, no wonder focusing is so hard.

When most people talk about ADHD, they focus on attention, hyperactivity, or executive functioning.

But what rarely gets mentioned?

Vision problems.

How ADHD Glasses Actually Work

ADHD glasses help reduce the strain your eyes and brain are under. Here’s how they do it:

  • Blue Light Filtering: These lenses reduce the harsh effects of screens and overhead lighting, especially in classrooms and computer-heavy environments.
  • Microprism Lenses: For those with eye misalignments, these lenses help your eyes work together more smoothly.
  • Less Visual Chaos: With clearer vision and fewer distractions, your brain can focus on what matters instead of trying to decode a blurry or overstimulating environment.

Think of it as turning down the brightness and noise—just enough to breathe easier.

Real-Life Benefits of ADHD GlassesHere’s what many people (especially late-diagnosed folks like us) notice when they try ADHD glasses:

1. Better Focus

By removing visual “static,” it’s easier to stay on task without your brain constantly tapping out.

2. Less Eye Strain

Screens, lights, and reading become less draining—whether you’re lesson planning or scrolling through IEPs.

3. Fewer Headaches

If you regularly get tension headaches or migraines, vision support can make a bigger difference than expected.

4. Improved Sleep

Blue light messes with melatonin. Glasses that block it help your brain wind down faster at night.

5. Easier Reading

Especially for those with vertical heterophoria or BVD, letters stop dancing and tracking text becomes smoother.

6. More Physical Comfort

Less neck strain, fewer balance issues, and even feeling more grounded—all possible when your eyes are finally working in sync.

7. Calmer Sensory System

When your eyes don’t have to fight to focus, your whole nervous system can chill a little.

But Do They Work for Everyone?

Not always. Like everything ADHD-related, what helps one person might not help another.

I first learned about ADHD-related vision problems thanks to René Brooks over at Black Girl Lost Keys.

Her blog post on vertical heterophoria opened a whole new world for me—and started me down this path.

Key Takeaways

  • ADHD glasses can reduce eye strain, support better sleep, and improve focus.
  • They may help with hidden vision problems that make ADHD symptoms worse.
  • Not everyone will benefit—but for some, it’s a game-changer.
  • Always consult a professional to see if these might be right for you.
