What Are Executive Functions & Why Do They Matter?

Executive functions are like your brain's management system.

Some call them life skills, or simply adulting!

For many of us with ADHD, autism, AuDHD, or SPD, this “system” tends to crash unexpectedly.

(Usually when we need it most.)

Or we were never taught these skills explicitly.

(Or both!)

For myself, the more I learn about ADHD and neurodivergence as a whole, the more I want to know.

The more I see how these skills have shaped my life both in the past and today.

These functions include:

  • Organizing tasks
  • Managing time
  • Prioritizing
  • Holding information in working memory
  • Regulating emotions
  • Starting (and finishing) tasks

Once you understand what these babies are, it's a lot easier to start working with them.

How ADHD Organization Worksheets Can Help

If you've ever looked at your to-do list and wanted to cry…

Me, too.

These ADHD organization worksheets are designed to:

  • Break down overwhelming tasks into manageable steps
  • Help you visually plan, reflect, and re-evaluate
  • Build a rhythm around your unique workflow
  • Offer gentle accountability

Plus they start with a brain dump! Who doesn't love off-loading allllllllll the things?

In fact, I'm going to do one of these today.

How to Use These Worksheets Effectively

Here’s a suggested step-by-step process (but feel free to go in any order):

1. Brain Dump

Get it all out—no filter. Big tasks, small ones, ideas, random reminders. Questions… write it out.

(Or speak it out with your phone's voice recorder.)

2. Choose Focus Areas

Highlight or circle 1–3 things to focus on. Keep it realistic.

You can draw or tell someone your choices, too.

3. Plan It Out

Pick a time, place, and tools. Be specific.

Example:

“On Wednesday at 11:30 am, I’ll fill out one worksheet at my desk, with my headphones and my erasable pen.”

4. Share With an Accountability Buddy

Let someone know your plan. Follow up afterward—even if it flopped. Talk it through.

Focusmate is great for this. I love having accountability partners and this app makes it so easy.

Personalization Tips for Your Unique Brain

These worksheets are a starting point. Customize them in ways that feel good to you!

  • Use colorful pens or stickers
  • Print on thicker paper for sensory preference
  • Tape them to your mirror, fridge, or even inside your closet
  • Make them visible—because ADHD working memory loves to hide things from you

Working With Accountability & Support

Doing this solo is hard. Who can you lean on?

Organization doesn’t need to be a solo mission. It’s okay to ask for support.

Building on Strengths, Not Just Fixing Struggles

You’re not broken—you’re brilliantly wired.

These worksheets also help highlight some of your skills, gifts, or talents:

  • Creativity
  • Adaptability
  • Outside-the-box thinking
  • …and so much more!

This is about crafting a system that supports you.

Going Forward

If managing daily life sometimes feels like playing a video game on mega challenge mode, you’re not alone.

Lots of us (myself included) deal with and manage these issues on the regular.

And lead happy, successful, fulfilling lives.

These ADHD organization worksheets are designed to soften the edges.

To support your executive functions so you can focus on what you want to.

They can get you moving in the direction you want, and remind you that progress is better than perfection!

You're doing great—truly.
